The Refashioners 2016: And the winners are….

This is a really exciting decision to reveal! But HARD. Man this was hard! This years challenge, I think it’s fair to say, has captivated people’s imagination, creativity and ingenuity more than any series before it. Maybe it’s because we ALL have old pairs of jeans that we keep meaning to “do something with” and this challenge has given us the impetus to actually get on and do it.  Maybe it’s because denim is such an awesome, versatile and timeless fabric. Maybe it’s because jeans themselves throw up so many challenges that the only option is to take the ingenuity up a gear in order to overcome them. Maybe the inspiring makes that have been appearing all over this blog & the various social media channels has opened our eyes to the potential in old pairs of jeans. That jeans refashioning is NOT inevitably going to end up looking all “Becky home Ecky” (unless you want it to which is equally fine of course!). Maybe, just maybe, it’s a combination of all of those things. This years challenge has achieved everything I wanted it to….and then some!! I have been FLOORED by the amount of time, thought and creative energy that has gone into everyone’s makes.  Which of course has made it all the harder to arrive at this decision. But arrive at a decision we must. So without further ado…

1st-prize

This dress by Messy Essy had me (well, all of us) floored from the moment we saw it. The sheer AMOUNT of work that went into this is almost enough on it’s own. That intricate central panel of  quilt pieced cubes itself took days of painstaking work. When I first saw that on it’s own (before it became a dress!) it occurred to me that you could frame it and put it on a wall as a piece of art in it’s own right. Add to that the careful thought and placement of the various hues of blue to achieve not only a 3d cube effect, but an ombre 3d cube effect!!! Hello!! Then, add to that the way it sits perfectly as part of the overall design of the dress, brilliantly executed and perfectly suited to the wearer. The simple elegance of this dress when worn, belies the intricacy and skill needed to make it. All of this making “the cuboid dress” a worthy winner of the first prize. The Refashioners 2016 - Your Makes - Vol I

special-recognition

Our special recognition prize goes to Selmin for this awesome denim sweatshirt. The general consensus is that it was just so well executed, so wearable. Edgy, bang up to date, makes clever use of the original seams. The colour blocking is so well considered and the subtle sashiko detailing acts to tie all of those blue hues together even further. I’ve heard it said that many people prefer their refashions not to look like they were made from jeans. I don’t think this does, but it does subtly nod to the garment’s original incarnation, and denim’s workwear history; and plays a little homage to the way clothes used to be repaired rather than thrown away. Yet it does all this whilst looking modern and, more importantly, really reflecting the wearers individual style. And I just love it for all of those reasons. (And actually would like to steal it for myself!!)The Refashioners 2016 - Your Makes - Vol 2

You can read more about Selmin’s process and thoughts on the challenge here.

It has honestly been astounding, and at times quite emotional (I know I’m a sop) each time a new entry popped up.  And to read all of your blog posts and hear what you have gained from this challenge. That it was hard, but you were glad you did it. That it made you realise that if you push yourself out of your comfort zone, you realise how much more you are capable of. In many instances that this refashioned garment is your proudest make to date. That you will never look at a pair of old jeans in the same way again. That you’ve caught the refashioning bug despite having never really considered it before. Seeing all of those makes and hearing all of your thoughts on this challenge, has made me so proud. Proud that I set the ball rolling on this challenge. But the truth is, I am not responsible for all of this. You all are.  I just set the scene and lit the touch paper. And just LOOK where our sewing community took it. THAT I am proud to be a part of.

Thank you to everyone who lent their energy to this years challenge. And while you may not have won “the big prize”, you have inspired me. And you have inspired your fellow sewers. And you have proven yet again how amazing our sewing community is. Hopefully you will have taken new things from this challenge that you never knew about yourself and about refashioning. And those are all wins. Bigger ones in my book. So thank you.

Question is……what the hell do I come up with to top this next year????!!!!

The Refashioners 2015: and the winner is…..

I seriously cannot overstate just HOW difficult it has been to arrive at this decision! There has been so much creativity and ingenuity that I wish I had a multitude of prize packages to give away! There is a caveat to this. Which you’ll come to further down. But for now…without further ado…meet this years winner of The Refashioners 2015 “Get Shirty” Community Challenge….

Mirjam Liechti

When I first saw these trousers my jaw literally dropped. When you have lots of fabric to work with there’s a degree of flexibility in what you can do. Margin for error too. But to eek a pair of trousers out of a shirt; with all the fitting nuances we all know are involved? Well that requires gutsy vision, precision and a whole different kind of creativity…THE REFASHIONERS 2015 - YOUR MAKES (6)

The way in which Mirjam has retained the original essence of this shirt and her use of practically every last piece in details like the ankle cuffs (the original shirt cuffs) and the matching braces and button tabs is super clever. But it’s subtle too. What’s more, I get the sense that this really is a reflection of her style and personal aesthetic; which surely is one of the best kinds of motivation for refashioning and sewing our own clothes!

This was Mirjam’s first make for The Refashioners. Again, clever but subtle reuse of the cuffs at the waistband. And here’s the kicker…Mirjam is a beginner sewer! Having taken up sewing little more than a year ago Mirjam says she has discovered her passion. So much so that she has given up a career as a qualified teacher (!) to work part time in sales so she can attend the Swiss College of Textiles where she started a month ago and will be training for the next two years. All of which ramps up just how impressive this is and for me, is indicative of someone who has a natural talent for creative sewing that should surely be encouraged. She has pretty much promised me that she is going to start a blog in the not too distant future (I for one shall be following that with interest! One to watch I’d say. You know when you get the sense you could be witnessing the start of something awesome?  That’s what my gut tells me about this lady!) But in the meantime…you can keep up with Mirjam here 🙂the refashioners 2015 - your makes

And now for that caveat!

Lisa Poblenz

Lisa blogs over at Pattern & Branch and for a long time I literally could not decide between these two. This make by Lisa is SERIOUSLY awesome, involved a lot of work on her part and is deserving of some recognition. You should go check out the process. Seriously!

I promoted this community challenge as having one prize package and one winner. And I felt I should honour that. But had I had two prize packages to award, this would have been it. So with Mirjam’s permission I peeled off a little something from that immense prize package for Lisa; and she will be receiving the trio of Megan Nielsen patterns. Seriously. Awesome. Skills. The Refashioners 2015 - your makes (3)

So that’s that. All of these awesome prizes (bar the caveat above) will be winging their way to Mirjam very shortly…..

The Refashioners 2015 Awesome Prize Package

And that rounds up this years series of The Refashioners. It’s been so amazing. The blogger challenge was phenomenal and just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, in comes the community challenge and blows us all away again! The community challenge will now become a permanent element of The Refashioners series, and yes, I’m already putting together the bones of next year’s series! ( we’re gonna need more prize packages). I think it’s fair to say that men’s wardrobes/closets are a little less safe today than they were a few weeks ago…sorry chaps! (Not!) Please please please keep refashioning and looking at the fabric that you have at your fingertips before consigning it to landfill or abandonment 😉 Until next year people, this is The Refashioners 2015….signing off.

The Refashioners 2015 – Round Up & over to YOU!!!

Doesn’t seem like that long ago I was hitting “publish” on the first post in this series; and now here we are! At the end of the blogger element of The Refashioners 2015. August has been crazy behind the scenes here and to be honest I’m feeling a bit pooped. But in a very very happy way. Because man, just look at the inspiring ideas for shirt refashions these awesome ladies have come up with! Such ingenuity and variety here. (You can view each individual post via The Refashioners gallery in the menu bar)…THE REFASHIONERS 2015 - ROUND UP COLLAGE

So how about it? Are you feeling inspired to raid the charity shops or the wardrobes of your menfolk yet? Good. Because we are passing over the #getshirty baton to YOU now; and for the rest of September. And one lucky refashioner stands to win a HUGE prize package of sewing goodies now worth just under £700!!!!

The Refashioners 2015 Awesome Prize Package

NOTE: To clear up some confusion and/or questions. The refashions above are not entered into the community challenge element. They are purely for your inspiration and the prize package is purely for the community challenge element. ie JUST. FOR. YOU. 🙂

How will the final winner of said prize package be chosen? In the first instance we’ll be scouring through your submissions on Instagram and Pinterest (we being myself and the bloggers above) and sharing our favourites here throughout September. Taking into account reader response to those we’ll select a winner after 27th Sept and share that with you here shortly afterwards. And then my friends, The Refashioners 2015 will close it’s doors for another year! (Full prize package deets here. Entry deets here)

But WAIT! Don’t cry yet! (Just me then? Sniff). There is so much to be done between now and then! YOU lot have got so much to share (I know because you’ve already started sharing and it looks AWESOME!). And  I know increasing numbers of you have acquired your shirts and are ready to dive in (keep tagging me on IG peops I love seeing the progress shots too!). So, as a little bonus inspiration treat for you….. I’ll let you into a little secret….We had a secret pinterest board….The Refashioners 2015 - Getting Shirty Pinboard

It goes back to the early part of this year and it’s where myself and some of the other bloggers above pinned inspiration and ideas while WE were trying to work out what to do with OUR shirts. I thought you would likey alot. Since all our refashions are now “out of the bag” I made it “un-secret” so you guys can take a look at some more awesome shirt refashioning inspiration all in one space. Well, apart from here of course…keep coming back here, lol 😉
